In this grade 8 English course, students will learn how to analyze word choice and syntax, as well as how to analyze the structure of paragraphs. They will learn how to understand the role of particular sentences in the context of the whole text, specifically the advantages and disadvantages of particular sentences in a genre of writing.

Unit 3 - Literature: Make inferences from a text, analyze character, setting, and plot development, evaluate the importance of dialogue, look out for analogous speech/diction, and have a focused look into the role of irony in a text.

Unit 4 - Informational Text: Analyze connections made in a text between individuals and events, understand figurative meanings, determine an author’s point of view, and evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of various portrayals of information.

Unit 5 - Writing: Make distinguished and innovative claims, establish a constant tone, provide a strong conclusion, organize information illustratively and graphically, and use concise language.

Unit 6 - Speech and Listening: Engage in discussion about grade 8 topics, provide relevant evidence and information in a group setting, respectfully offer opposing views, and distinguish relevant information from irrelevant information.
