Grade 8 ScienceTutoring: Dublin, Pleasanton, San Ramon, and Livermore & Online Options

In 8th grade, students focus on Physical Science. This course focuses on matter, energy, and mass. It also covers the basic components in all forms of matter and the role that they play in the everyday world. Students also learn about machines and artificial, man-made resources.

What you'll learn

Unit 1 - Learn about the different types of matter, mass and volume, states of matter, and the kinetic theory model.

Unit 2 - Learn about elements and atoms, the structure of an atom, navigating the periodic table, molecules, and compounds.

Unit 3 - Learn about chemical and physical changes, mixtures and solutions, the law of conservation of mass, and pure vs. non-pure solutions.

Unit 4 - Learn about the uses and forms of energy, the transformations of energy, and the law of conservation of energy.

Unit 5 - Learn about heat, conduction, convection, radiation, conductors, and insulators, as well as thermal energy.

Unit 6 - Learn about the concept of magnetism, the formation of the magnetic field, the impact of magnetism on everyday life, and the causes of magnetism.

Unit 7 - Learn about electricity, the parts of a circuit, the similarities and differences between series and parallel circuits, work, and resistance.

Unit 8 - Learn about waves, the characteristics of waves, the similarities, and differences between transverse and longitudinal waves, and the travel of waves.

Unit 9 - Learn about sound, sound waves, pitch, loudness, and the travel of sound.

Unit 10 - Learn about electromagnetic energy, and understand the characteristics of high and low electromagnetic energy.

Unit 11 - Learn about light, the science behind color, sources and receivers over light, the law of reflection, the transmission and reflection of light, as well as the characteristics of convex and concave lenses.

Unit 12 - Learn about the concept of a force, balance and unbalanced forces, friction and gravity, Newton’s Law of Gravitation, buoyancy, centripetal forces, and inertia.

Unit 13 - Learn about motion, the ways motion is measured, Isaac Newton, and Newton’s 3 Laws of Motion.

Unit 14 - Learn about the concept of work, machines and their purposes, mechanical advantages, and efficiency of a machine.

Unit 15 - Learn about alternative energy resources, renewable and non-renewable sources, fossil fuels, and various forms of natural energy.
